Comics Arts Conference Session #5: The Horror of It All: Exploring Pain, Trauma, and Loss in Horror Comics
Saturday March 28, 2026 12:30pm - 2:00pm PDT
Why do we like stories about ghouls, darkness, and other assorted horrors? Some of us can't stand to be spooked, yet others can't get enough. What can we learn about the human condition from tales of horror? Delving into the darkness are Shelly Clevenger (Sam Houston State University), Daniel Jun Kim (PopMythology.com), and Alex Langley (Spider-Man Psychology: Untangling Webs). They explore pain, trauma, and resilience in the Ice Cream Man series, Home Sick Pilots, and Nice House on the Lake. Panelists use the genre of comics to help us understand how horror can illustrate both the worst and best of the human experience.

Comic Pitch Review Saturday
Saturday March 28, 2026 5:00pm - 6:00pm PDT
Most creators have no trouble coming up with great ideas for new comics, but they often struggle to speak clearly and concisely about those ideas to other people. Giving a good pitch is a vital skill in bringing your project to life. Fortunately, it's also a skill you can learn and improve with practice—and Pitch Review is a great place to do that. If you're someone who wants to get better at pitching your work (and especially if you're a writer or artist attending the Comic Creator Connection immediately after this event), this is your chance to practice giving your pitch and get some invaluable help from a professional writer and speaker coach. Pitch reviews will be conducted by Douglas Neff, a professional speechwriter, speaker coach, and host of the Comic Creator Connection. This is not a typical panel. These are 3- to 5-minute individual coaching sessions for as many people as can be accommodated in the scheduled time. Spaces are allotted on a first-come, first-served basis, and everyone is welcome to watch and learn from the sessions.

Star Trek at 60: Starfleet Academy: Real Uniter or Faux Divider?
Saturday March 28, 2026 6:00pm - 7:00pm PDT
Is it 2017 again? Star Trek turns 60 with a host of anniversary plans, but Starfleet Academy has bowed with more controversy than any recent series since Star Trek: Discovery's heated first year. With SFA's first season wrapped, "Dr. Trek" Larry Nemecek (The Trek Files, Portal 47) asks a host of Trek industry vets for their own takes on the series as well as the meta-reaction to it: Neal Hallford (DP, Con of Wrath), Matt Jennings (For All Mankind, 1701: A Blerd Story), Tony Kim (Hero Within), Charlynn Schmiedt (Mission Log: Prodigy, Star Trek & Chill). Is that initial negative reaction by some critics and fans more about clickbait-chasing talkers and review-bombing than actual criticism and nuance? Can we sense whether IRL armchair Trekkies feel as mainstream critics and activist fans do—in support?

Comic Creator Connection Saturday
Saturday March 28, 2026 7:00pm - 9:00pm PDT
Are you a writer with a great idea for a comic book series, but you can't draw? Or maybe you're an artist looking to illustrate an incredible story, but you can't write. WonderCon is proud to once again host the Comic Creator Connection, a fast-paced networking event that puts writers and artists together to help them meet new creative partners. Here's how it works: In a two-hour period, writers and artists will sit down across from each other at a table. (And by artists, we mean pencillers, inkers, colorists, etc.—all are welcome!) Then, in five-minute sessions, you will talk one-on-one with each other about your ideas and skills. At the end of each five-minute period, you will get up and move on to the next person. If you're interested in furthering the conversation, you'll exchange contact information. Think of it as speed-dating but for writers and artists! Pro Tip: The room often fills up, so come early for the best chance at getting in. Seating begins at 6:45 PM.

Monica Duarte (editor-in-chief, Temple of Geek), Victoria Male (writer, producer, and journalist), Madison Morrow (journalist and host, NijiFest, Temple of Geek), Caitlin Tyrrell (journalist, Screen Rant, Temple of Geek), and Nick Williams (content creator and journalist), alongside moderator Christina Silvoso (cosplayer and host), discuss the similarities between stories and scoops, how the Hero's Journey applies to the pursuit of news, and what a journalistic creator needs to survive in their respective climates.
